Preschoolers at SonShine Preschool in Paola didn’t let the recent stretch of cold weather get them down. In fact, they embraced it.
Since classes began last fall at First Lutheran Church, the preschoolers have been bringing in milk cartons, said Kris Fuchs, director.
After collecting about 225 cartons, the classes were ready to construct an igloo that now sits in the classroom and provides a creative spot for the children to read or play.
Fuchs said the parents had to do the actual construction, since it involved glue guns, but the preschoolers have been extremely excited about the igloo.
On Thursday, many of the children dressed in black and white in honor of the penguin unit they are studying, and they took turns playing inside their fictional ice fortress.
Fuchs isn’t sure how long the igloo will remain intact, as one side is already caving in a bit. That side was moved toward the window, where the sun shines in.
“We say that’s why it’s melting,” Fuchs said with a smile.
The learning doesn’t stop once the igloo comes down, though, as Fuchs said the plastic milk cartons will be recycled, teaching the children the importance of taking care of the environment.
