Bible Study

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof,
for correction,
and for training in righteousness."
2 Timothy 3:16

Through the Bible studies at First Lutheran, we engage the Scriptures to understand their proclamation of Jesus Christ, their historical context, and their direction for our Christian lives today. We believe that God only speaks to us with certainty through the Scriptures. Therefore, God’s Word is incapable of error, clear in its purpose, and authoritative for every phase of life.
Join us to learn more about the God’s Word!

Sunday MorNING BIBLE STUDY
Join us every Sunday morning at 10:15 in the Sanctuary to study God’s Word. Pastor Schultz is currently leading a study on the book of Matthew.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
"Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD." Psalm 34:11

First Lutheran Church offers several opportunities for children to learn Bible stories and grow in their faith. God’s Word creates and strengthens the faith of even the littlest listeners. Children, as early as 3 years-old, will have the opportunity to hear Bible stories, sing songs, make crafts, and engage the Scriptures throughout the year.
F.L.Y.
First Lutheran Youth is a group of high school aged teens that desire to grow in their understanding of the Lutheran faith and the Word of God. F.L.Y. builds upon the foundation given in Catechism Class as teens learn to navigate the world as baptized children of God. There are opportunities for service and fellowship throughout the year.
Roots – Going Deeper, Growing Wider
All trees need healthy roots. While you do not see most of the roots, you can see the results reaching up towards the sky and offering shade and beauty. There are two types of roots. The first kind is called the tap root, generally the first root a tree sends down. It is necessary to anchor the plant as it grows. The second kind is called a lateral root that extends sideways to reach more water and nutrients. Both types are necessary for a healthy tree. If there are only tap roots, then the tree can not reach new water sources. But if the tree only has shallow roots, then it will blow over with the first big storm.

Like a tree, our congregation needs two kinds of roots. You might not always see the roots, but you can see the results as more sinners are called to repentance and faith. Both kinds of roots are necessary here too. Christians need a strong, deep taproot; old or young, you need to keep learning. Second, our church needs to reach out to others and invite them to go deeper in the Christian faith. If we only have ‘tap roots’ – that is, if we know what we believe but never share it – then the Gospel won’t reach sinners in need of repentance and faith. But if we only have ‘lateral roots’ – if we only put effort into growing in numbers but not in faith and understanding – then our church will be blown over by false teaching and the Gospel will not truly reach sinners with the Gospel (Ephesians 4:14).

Roots serves as our new member introductory class as well as a current member refresher class. We dive into the book Lutheranism 101, a basic guide to Lutheran doctrine, history, and practice. The class is offered twice each year in the Spring and Fall, meeting for eight weeks on Sunday afternoons. Please contact Pastor Schultz or the church office if you are interested in joining us!
Wednesday Bible Studies
Coffee and Concord
At First Lutheran, we adhere to the unaltered Book of Concord (U.A.C.), because it is a right exposition of Scripture. The Book of Concord was published in 1580 and has served as the Lutheran Confession of faith through the centuries. Join us Wednesday mornings from 6:00-7:00 AM – along with a big pot of coffee – as we read and discuss the Book of Concord. No worries, there is no need to prepare before coming. We have books available, and we look forward to lively discussion every week.

Looking Forward to Sunday
Is it hard to focus on Sunday mornings? Do you have questions about the Bible you would like to ask? Wouldn’t it be great to know what’s coming? Join us Wednesdays at 9:30 AM to look forward to Sunday morning’s readings. No preparation is required. Just come, listen, and ask as many questions as you like!
